The Notch 8 Year features a subtle vinous quality, baking spice, cigar box, bergamot and butter crunch with a nose of dried apricot and hints of rosa rugosa. The Notch is made with 100% Maris Otter malt, a heritage barley cross-bred in 1966 and a longtime favorite in cask ale production due to its distinctive flavor and high quality. The grain is milled, mashed and fermented on property at Cisco Brewers, before being transferred next door to Triple Eight Distillery where it is distilled twice through an Arnold Holstein hybrid pot still.

The 8-year, the very first expression of The Notch, was released in 2008. It uses double-barreled maturation in red wine barrels that we re-coopered ourselves to impart soft tannins for texture. There is a distinct yet subtle berry/vinous quality while maintaining The Notch’s signature herbal nose.

The Notch Story

As one of the oldest single malt whisky distilleries in the United States, making among the first single malts in the nation post-Prohibition, Triple Eight Distillery is leading the way toward a new category of American Single Malt Whisky. Tucked away at the famed Cisco Brewers property on Nantucket, Triple Eight has long dedicated itself to making fine spirits. In 2000, Triple Eight began distilling The Notch, using the collective wisdom of their brewers, distillers, and vintners, and guided by renowned experts George McClements and John Ramsay in the early years in making the final blend.

What makes The Notch so special?
The short answer is the atmosphere. The natural beauty of the island, what makes Nantucket magical—the clear blue skies, the intoxicating scents of Rosa rugosa, honeysuckle, and bayberry mingling with the salt air, a damp fog rolling in—is embodied in The Notch.
